Comunidad Colectiva Featured in Netflix Documentary Series Immigration Nation

Charlotte, NC -The Netflix documentary series Immigration Nation set to air today, August 3rd, features Comunidad Colectiva, a Charlotte-based immigrant rights organization. The filmmakers followed organizers during the successful 2018 campaign to end 287(g) in Mecklenburg County and the ICE retaliation that followed in 2019.

“The documentary shows beyond a doubt that ICE is a rogue agency and has no place in our community. We hope that this documentary will shed light on the stories of retaliation and surveillance that organizers and directly impacted people have spoken of for so long,” said Stefania Arteaga Co-founder of Comunidad Colectiva and the Carolina Migrant Network.

Although the docuseries features the successful campaign to end the 287(g) in Mecklenburg County, sheriffs and ICE retaliated against these wins by pushing for statewide ICE enforcement collaboration. When that failed, additional sheriffs decided to enter into 287(g) partnerships called Warrant Service Officer Programs–a model piloted in Florida in 2019. The fight against ICE in North Carolina is not over. Comunidad Colectiva and the Red de Migrantes de Carolina del Norte continue to fight ICE enforcement and provide pro-bono bond representation to immigrants detained by ICE in the Carolinas.

Immigration Nation is a six-part documentary series that sounds the alarm on the immigration crisis in America by embedding with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, attorneys, activists, lawmakers, and undocumented immigrants, whose harrowing stories humanize a perilously politicized issue.
